The Biggest Time and Money Wasting Mistake New Businesses Make (and what to do instead!)


Approximately 5 years ago, after already working with new and underperforming business owners for another 5 years, I kept seeing the same mistakes over and over.

This one mistake is a “Silent Business Killer.” Most new business owners focus on it. Most underperforming business owners try to fix it thinking it’s the problem.

It can cost a lot of money, money that new and underperforming business owners say they don’t have. It can cost a lot of time trying to get it perfect, tweaking every last detail, hoping it’ll help sell their programs.

Or it can cost both: time and money. Now, I don’t know about you, but I don’t have a lot of time to waste and I certainly don’t waste to spend money on things that aren’t going to help me to my goal.. You?

So have you guess what the “Silent Business Killer” is?

It’s a website.

In order for your website to perform well, as an extension of your sales team, it has to have all the pieces in place in order to convey the message to the viewer that you are the business to work with.

To do this, you must have four skills under your belt before EVER trying to build a website.

These four skills, IN ORDER, are:

  • Your Messaging
  • Your Pricing
  • Your Packaging
  • Sales

With regards to your messaging, you have to be very clear on how to talk to potential clients so that you can attract them into your business.

If you’re not clear on how to talk to clients, what it is that they need to hear in order to make the decision to work with you, and an exactly how you help them, then what are you going to write on your website?

You see, most people start the website without having their messaging down pat and their website ends up repelling potential clients that would otherwise be a great fit.  This trains the potential clients to ignore you because your message didn’t resonate with them.


Clients will NOT keep coming back to you to see if your message changed and if it now applies to them.


So without doing the work to create clear client attracting messaging your website is a waste of time and money.

Let’s talk about pricing and packaging together.  It’s very simple.  If you are not clear on what you offer and how much it costs, again, what will you put on your website?

Your website cannot help you sell something that you’re not clear on.

The most important one in the list of four is Sales. I may argue this is the most important piece of any business.

Without sales, you don’t have a business.

Now, if you are not an EFFECTIVE SALESPERSON, your website means nothing.  If you don’t know how to sell, or you are too good at it, how on Earth will you create an effective website?

Sales is the skill I see most business owners shying away from for a number of reasons.  They think sales is sleazy.  They have trouble asking for money.  They aren’t confident in their skills.


Your website will not do something
for your business that you can’t.


So it’s important that these four skills are mastered in order.  In order to sell, you need to have a package at the right price.  Too low, and you’ll end up with needy demanding clients and you’ll be working with them until you go broke.  Too high, and you’ll have the clients to begin with.  Your package must offer exactly what the client wants and needs.

In order to offer your package at the right price, you must first attract clients to you and you do this through clear messaging.

So you see that you need your messaging first so you can bring clients into your business, then that your package and pricing so you have something to offer them, then you have a sales conversation so they can decide to work with you or not.


One more piece here, and that is most business owners will suggest that without a website they are not credible.  This is absolutely false.

This is a belief that will cause you to waste time and money that could be spent helping other people.  This is also an excuse to hide the fact that they are not confident in their skill.
